sharjah/ajman — Police authorities in Sharjah and Ajman stated that there were no school-related accidents on the first day of school in both emirates. Students had a smooth transit on opening day, with the police deploying 99 patrols in streets leading to the schools and in other congested areas in both emirates.
Major Mohammad Alai Al Naqbi, director of traffic and patrol department at Sharjah Police, said that the patrols were designated a day ahead and started their rounds at 4am near school complexes, to organise traffic and open the roads for school buses.
Separate lanes were allocated for school buses in the morning peak hours on all roads leading to schools area such as Maleiha, University City and Al Ezrra area.
All this is part of an integrated plan by all wings of the Sharjah police, including 79 patrols assigned to deal with the morning congestion. The road cameras linked to the operations room show the most congested areas, alerting the nearest patrols to address the issue.
Major Al Naqbi also called on parents to abide by traffic rules, use the drop-off parking spaces and avoid unauthorised parking.
Lt Col Jassim Bin Hadha, director of the operations department at Sharjah Police, said that they received 480 calls on the morning of school reopening on the 999 emergency number, and 106 on the non-emergency 901, all regarding traffic issues and general enquires.
He confirmed there were no traffic accidents on first day of the school, with the emirate witnessing a smooth flow of traffic. The Sharjah Police praised the positive response of drivers in general to the police’s instructions to abide by the traffic laws and speed limits near schools.
Col Saif Al Falasi, director of traffic and patrol department at Ajman Police, said they have deployed 20 patrols in all school areas and congested roads during peak hours.
“The police are making great efforts to reduce traffic jams in Ajman and ensure that the school year is free of traffic accidents,” Al Falasi said.
In line with the Ministry of Interior, Sharjah Police are ensuring traffic preparedness in all ways.
The traffic plan includes a safety campaign to be continued for three months, to educate parents, drivers and supervisors on the necessary measures to protect their children and students. It will also instruct school students, especially the little ones, on the safe way to board and disembark from school buses and to cross roads.
