RAK man who killed parents to be kept in lunatic asylum

- Ahmed Shaaban

ras al khaimah — The Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court has ordered an Emirati man, who is accused of burning his parents to death, to be kept in a lunatic asylum.

The court believed that A.K.A.S., who also stabbed his brother at Julphar area on December 18 last year, suffered paranoia before, during and after the crime.

The court, based on the forensic report, said that the 38-yearold accused posed a grave risk to himself and others, and must be kept in a specialised mental health facility.

The Ras Al Khaimah Public Prosecution had earlier charged the accused with premeditatedly burning his parents to death and stabbing his brother with the intention of killing him.

After the crime, the suspect fled to a mountainous area, but the police managed to track him down, and arrested him in few hours, police sources said.

After his arrest, some reports said the accused was mentally disordered, while some others affirmed that he was not remorseful for his crimes. “He was not good to all of us, including his own wife, children, brothers, sisters, and of course his parents whom he used to shout and swear at,” his younger brother was quoted as saying.

“The moment he entered the house, he dragged his father to the ground floor, poured petrol on him, and set him on fire,” the brother added. Though scared, the mother rushed to her son trying to stop him, but he pushed her down

and set her on fire as well, he explained. “He even stabbed me while trying to defend my parents and set the entire house on fire for no clear reason.”

Police sources said the suspect purposefully set their parents on fire, but he seemed to be mentally challenged. “A medical report on his mental health has been requested from the bodies concerned.”

The civil defence department was alerted about the fire around 7.30am. “The 62-year-old Emirati man, who was in a critical condition, was declared dead late on the day.”

Medical sources told Khaleej Times that the old man, identified as K.A.O., could not survive the 90 to 100 per cent burns he suffered. “He was airlifted in an ambulance chopper to a hospital in Abu Dhabi, but his condition was so critical that he could not make it.”

The man’s wife was declared dead shortly after being rushed to the Saqr Hospital. ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
