Don’t let food go waste, fill up the fridges
dubai — The Dubai Municipality (DM) has urged the residents ahead of the World Food Day, which falls on October 16, to commit to zero tolerance for food waste.
To mark the day, the food safety department of the civic body has charted several programmes including a ‘Fill up the Fridges’ and #ZeroFoodWaste campaigns.
The ‘Fill up the Fridges’ campaign will be organised through volunteers to ensure that all fridges are full with foods that can be donated to someone else without being wasted. Only packaged foods should be put in the Food Bank Food fridges placed at different locations across Dubai.
“We as individuals have to commit ourselves to reducing food waste in Dubai and the UAE, whether it is by reducing portion sizes, or communicating with consumers in a better way or by better stock management. Every food

business will be able to do something to reduce food waste,” said Khalid Mohammed Sharif, assistant director-general of DM for the environment, health and safety control sector.
“According to the UN, onethird of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally each year. By reducing loss and waste along the food value chain, healthy food systems can contribute to promoting climate adaptation and mitigation, preserving natural resources, and reinforcing rural livelihoods,” he said.
The residents along with the municipality employees are invited to join the UAE Food Bank and the food safety department by participating in the drive by sharing their creative ideas and messages on their favourite social media channels using the hashtag #ZeroFoodWaste. Also, they can send the screen shot of their post to UAEfoodbank@dm.gov.ae, to participate in the ‘Most Creative Post Competition’.
The municipality has also invited food establishments to present their innovative methodologies for identifying food losses, and potential solutions by submitting their ideas through the official website by clicking on the link #ZeroFoodWaste.
