Dubai aims to become a hub of disruptive tech

-

It’s the fully immersive worlds of virtual, augmented and hyper reality that represent the future. Technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things promise a smarter future and easier ways of life. Even today as we occupy space in brick and mortar edifices, it is in the ‘cloud’ where most of our lives are lived and shared. No wonder the leadership’s thrust is on developing the technology sector in the UAE and using it in ways that benefits people at large. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister and VicePresident of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is right in saying that ‘we are on the cusp of a technological revolution in our work, lives and services’. And Dubai, arguably, is gearing to be at the forefront of change by inspiring innovation, ideation, and encouraging talent to take the leap of faith and realise their potential. Events like the Gitex Technology Week have been a significant enabler in this regard. It has been a flagship event attracting multinationals to the shores of the UAE and giving start-ups in the region the much needed push.

Success of homegrown companies such as souq.com, Careem speak for themselves. More and more names are making a splash and disrupting status quo. The future is online and it is where traditional sectors are fast transitioning. Online ventures for sectors such as retail, fashion, e-commerce, blockchain are aiding the rise local companies. Arab world has its own music streaming service, and one that is seeing a meteoric rise. As the exhibition celebrates its 37th edition, there has never been greater enthusiasm among investors, venture capitalists, and accelerators to find new projects and invest in them. Notably, there are severe lacunae in funding for start-ups, but the UAE is making good progress in filling the gaps. The Gitex Technology Week encourages investors to open purse strings, invest in regional talent and provide them the financial succour. For companies here, it’s all about ‘reimaging realities’ and pushing the boundaries. Future is what we make of it. Isn’t it? And Dubai knows how to do that in style.
