dubai — Two Bangladeshi men have gone on trial in the Court of First Instance for assaulting a domestic worker in an alley and robbing Dh4,875 from him. The defendants committed the crime along with other accomplices, who are at large. One of them allegedly threatened to kill the victim and dump his body in the trash bin if he reported them to the police.

The two workers, aged 39 and 26, faced charges of forcible theft on the street, making criminal threats and blackmail. The incident allegedly took place on July 14 and was reported to Bur Dubai Police.

“I was walking in an alley when two men came in my way. They assaulted me after I refused to hand them over my money. They forced me to give them my wallet from which they took Dh4,875. They then knocked me down. One of them hit me with a stick on my back. I called the police after they fled the scene,” said the 28-year-old Bangladeshi complainant.

A police officer said he went to the crime scene. “The victim looked scared and had red marks on his face. He told me he was walking between buildings when about eight men blocked his way. They threatened him and snatched his wallet and ran away after beating him up.”

The victim identified them among other suspects at the police station and saw the others assaulting the victim.

The trial has been adjourned to October 26.
