- Staff Reporter

dubai — The Dubai Municipality has denied the accuracy of a video clip that shows potato chips burning. The civic body’s food safety department clarified that the flames on the fried potato are a “natural result of burning carbohydrates, oils and salt contained in the product”. It does not indicate the presence of any chemicals that can seriously affect the safety of the food product.

The municipality appealed to

“Consumers need not doubt the safety of these food products as the regulatory authorities take all necessary measures to ensure their safety at all stages of manufacturing,” an official said. “The Dubai Municipality also takes samples of all the food items that are traded in the emirate and subjects them to a stringent laboratory testing programme. Consumer protection and safety are the most important responsibilities of the food safety department.”

The official clarification comes within the “Confirmed News” initiative on the Dubai Municipality’s website, which aims to reduce the circulation of rumours that are spread on social media.
