Sudden deviation leads to fatalities, warn police

- Afkar Abdullah

sharjah — Sudden deviation is one of the main causes of horrific traffic accidents that cause fatalities in the emirate, according to the police. The Sharjah Police have launched a traffic awareness campaign to educate motorists about the risks and dangers that sudden deviations pose to road users.

The police said that they are carrying out massive efforts to curb traffic violations that can cause death or permanent disability to the victims. Lt Col Saud Al Shaibah, head of the awareness department at the Sharjah Police, said that recent statistics revealed sudden deviation is one of the main causes of serious accidents that result in fatalities.

Sudden deviation is a violation under the Federal Traffic Law, imposing a Dh1,000 fine on the erring driver and four black points.

The rules also penalise overtaking by imposing a fine of Dh600 on the driver and adding six traffic points to the motorist’s record. If a heavy vehicle driver fails to comply with the obligatory driving line, a fine of Dh400 will be slapped.

Lt Al Shaibah urged the drivers to abide by traffic laws and respect road users’ rights. They should also be aware of their traffic responsibilities as well as legal repercussions and actively contribute in making the Sharjah Police’s traffic awareness programmes a success.

Accident-free school reopening

Separately, the Sharjah Traffic and Patrols department confirmed that there were no accidents on the first day of the school, after the first term holiday.

The department has set up plans to ensure the safe and smooth transportation of students to and from their schools. Police have intensified traffic patrols on all roads, squares and intersections, leading to school complexes and entrances to university city in Sharjah. The police are keen to ensure students’ attendance at the beginning of the second half of 2018. Police also have taken measures, procedures and made preparations to ensure a rapid, effective response to all safety emergencies, student security, and to reduce congestion and traffic jams.

The Sharjah Police praised the positive response of drivers in general and school bus drivers in particular, on their instructions to abide by traffic laws, speed limits especially near schools, seating children under the age of 10 in the rear seats of the vehicle and using seat belts to ensure safety.
