Al Ain claim top honours in jiu-jitsu

abu dhabi — Al Ain Club finished on top with a total score of 2,734 points at the end of the fourth round of the President’s Jiu-Jitsu Cup for the 2017-2018 season, which took place at the Baynounah Educationa­l Complex in Al Dhafra on Saturday. Al Wahda finished second with 2,010 points and Al Jazira Club in third with a total of 1,785.

The fifth and final Round will be held at the Mubadala Arena located in Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi.

The event saw the participat­ion of Omar Ahmed Abdullah Al Hosani from Al Jazira Club, who won a gold medal after participat­ing in the previous three rounds in the under-18 youth category. Omar is the brother of Ahmed Abdullah Al Hosani, who died during his national duty in Yemen. Al Hosani dedicated the gold medal to the soul of his martyred brother.

The competitio­n was divided into three categories for both men and women, youth under-18, juniors under-21 and seniors 21 years and above.

Mohammed bin Dalmouj, board member of the UAE Jiu Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) and director of the championsh­ip, was delighted with the success of the championsh­ip bearing the name of The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and praised Al Dhafra Sports Club for the cooperatio­n to host the event. Mohammed said: “The participat­ion numbers continue to increase, and now stands at 340 players of different belts colours and clubs in the country.”

UAEJJF vice-president Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri said: “The success of each round of this prestigiou­s championsh­ip supports the strategic goals of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation in spreading the affinity for this sport amongst the UAE youth, and assuring the UAE’s position as an internatio­nal hub for this sport.”
