Egypt’s Sporting Club bags gold
sharjah — In what turned out to be an exciting and nail-biting basketball final Egypt’s Sporting Club saw off a fighting Al Fuhays of Jordan 63-62 to bag gold at the Arab Women Sports Tournament 2018 (AWST).
Sporting Club from Egypt had a strategy in place since the very first match of the tournament. They were at AWST to emerge as the basketball champions, a chance they missed marginally in the third edition of AWST in 2016, as they took home the bronze.
UAE’s Sharjah Sports Club had to settle for bronze.
The 10-day tournament which concluded on Monday featured 1,000 female Arab athletes from 69 clubs representing 17 Arab countries, who competed in nine sporting disciplines that are part of the Olympics list.
At the end of it Bahrain finished in first place with 12 gold medals, Egypt came second with 9 golds and Algeria finished in third with 7 golds.
Individual honours and recognitions followed. Menatuallah Muhammad from Sporting Club was awarded the lead scorer and allrounder trophies, and Rana Nabeel from the same club won the best three-point scorer. Karima Karim from Sharjah Sports Club for Women won the point guard player award, while Rubie Henry from Al Fuhays claimed the best winger trophy.
Sharjah Sports Club won the Sports Excellence Cup. Jeddah’s United Club won the Committees Club for Fair Play.
