DUBAI — A businessman, along with two other men, has been charged with kidnapping his exgirlfriend and locking her inside a warehouse for four hours.

The 40-year-old Palestinian businessman is accused in the Court of First Instance of threatening to kill his Uzbek girlfriend if she breaks up with him.

He also made her sign a written acknowledgement that she had borrowed Dh150,000 from him.

The businessman and his accomplices, a 35-year-old Sudanese and a Jordanian, 25, have all been charged with kidnap and illegal imprisonment. Two other men are still wanted in connection with the case.

The public prosecution recommended that the strictest penalty possible as per the law be inflicted on the defendants. The case dates back to November 21, 2017.

The complainant, 32, said she began working as a saleswoman at the main defendant’s company in June 2017. “After some time my boss and I got close and he gave me keys of a flat in the Business Bay where I could stay. But I broke up with him and gave him back the keys after finding out he was married.”

On June 21, 2017, when she was at a Tasheel centre to lodge a complaint against the company so her residence visa could be cancelled, the Sudanese man called her. “He picked me up in his car and three other men joined the ride. They assaulted until I fainted. I woke up to find myself tied up and a cloth in the mouth.

“I was taken to a warehouse of the businessman’s company in Al Jaddaf area. My boss then came and threatened me to stay with him or he would kill me. He also made me sign a paper that I owed him Dh150,000,” she said.

At around 2am, the businessman drove her back to the flat where he kept trying to convince her to stay as his girlfriend. She ran away after he left the flat at 10am. She got herself checked at a hospital and then filed a complaint at the police station.

The complainant’s 30-year-old flatmate, from Turkmenistan, said she came back that day with injury marks all over her body.

They assaulted me until I fainted. I woke up to find myself tied up and a cloth in my mouth.”
