dubai — Aiden O’Brien became a part of the horse racing legend after breaking the record for most Group or Grade 1 wins in a single year. The Irishman’s 28 wins last year eclipsed the previous record of the legendary trainer Bobby Frankel who had won 25 races in 2003. O’Brien’s dream season has now helped him win the HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum excellence award on Thursday.

“It was a great night. I felt privileged, honoured and grateful to receive the award,” the Irish trainer said on Friday.

O’Brien then thanked His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, VicePresident and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for giving him a chance to become a part of the incredible Dubai horse racing journey.

“Sheikh Mohammed is an incredibly special man. I don’t think we have ever seen a man that has done so much for so many people in so many countries and he does it very quietly. You know in countries like Ireland, England, France, everywhere, all over the world,” he said.

“And we feel privileged to be here. You know people have to come to Meydan to experience what it is like. It’s the most incredible venue. We thank him for giving us the opportunity to come and take part in this amazing event. We are very lucky to be part of this whole experience,” said O’Brien, a multiple winner of the Dubai World Cup night.

Despite the phenomenal success last year, O’Brien refuses to get carried away.

“Yes, it was an incredible season. We have a great team of people. The horses started off well and they continued the momentum. But the year is gone. Now we have to try to do well in the new season,” he said.

He has once again brought a very strong team to Dubai, with Idaho (Dubai Sheema Classic) and Lancaster Bomber (Dubai Turf) expected to be serious contenders for the top prizes.

“It’s going to be tough because the standards are so high here. But we are hoping to get a winner,” he said.

He will be fielding three horses in the $2 million UAE Derby, and it’s Mendelssohn who has the best chance of winning that race.

“Actually, all three horses — Mendelssohn, Seahenge, Threeandfourpence — have been running well. This is obviously a great race. It would be another great lead up to the Kentucky Derby,” he said.

“Of course, a win will be a massive boost going into the European races. We relish such tough and competitive races.”
