Students join Customs in raising piracy awareness
dubai — To highlight the ill effects of piracy and counterfeiting, students from about 35 UAE schools are participating in an initiative of the Dubai Customs and Ministry of Education, to make the community aware about Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and fake products.
The initiative named IP Award aims at measuring the upcoming generation’s awareness of IPR and educating the public about the risks of counterfeiting on consumers’ health and the country’s economy.
The competition is open to all school students in the UAE from Grades 4 to 9. It is also open to students of determination.
The Awareness and Education section of the IPR department of Dubai Customs underlined that all projects were to be submitted by the first week of April. The Dubai Customs hosts an awarding ceremony for winning projects and presents them to the media on April 26 of every year, marking the World Intellectual Property Day. The top three universities/colleges are granted a cash prize and participation certificates.
Dubai’s JSS Private School, one of the schools participating in the campaign, has titled its project ‘Engineering Intellectually, Change re-invented’. “Senior students are bringing in a ‘new movement’ by designing and conducting innovative ‘IPR awareness’ sessions in school, and in the community at large, using Lego blocks ingeniously. It is initiative like these which help our students acquire the skills of a 21 Century learner,” said Chitra Sharma, principal of JSSPS.
