Man sent to jail over assault on policeman

- Marie Nammour

dubai — A Dubai resident, who used force against two police officers, was sentenced to three months in jail on Monday.

According to court documents, the 23-year-old Egyptian man acted violently when handled by a policeman and another officer. He punched one of them and resisted the other, knocking him down.

He also verbally abused them in front of other people.

The Court of First Instance found him guilty of the charges of physically assaulting and verbally abusing police officers, consuming alcohol without a licence and damaging a public property. He damaged the uniform of one of the cops. Prosecutors, who investigated the case, urged the court to inflict the stiffest penalty possible on him, according to the law. During his court appearance, he only pleaded guilty to the alcohol consumption charge.

The court also ordered his deportation upon completion of the three-month-jail term.

The incident was registered on January 11, this year, at Bur Dubai police station.

“We were on duty call around 1.15am when we were informed about a theft incident at the labour accommodation of a junk food outlet in Al Quoz industrial area,” a police sergeant said.

“We went to the area and spoke to a person who complained he suspected that the accused had stolen from him as he shared the same room. The latter looked drunk when we tried to question him. After we took him inside the patrol car, he started insulting us, claiming he was not a thief.”

The sergeant further said: “My colleague told me to handcuff him to stop him from smoking. Before I could put the handcuffs in his hands, he pushed me and got out of the car. He then struggled with my colleague and fell on him. As I tried to pull him up, he punched me twice.”

The verdict remains subject to appeal by the accused within 15 days.
