RAK court fines man for false car theft claim

- Ahmed Shaaban

ras al khaimah — An Asian resident will have to shell out a fine of Dh2,000 for lodging a false car theft claim. The misdemeanour court of appeal in Ras Al Khaimah ordered him to pay the penalty.

The suspect lodged a complaint at the Mamura police station that his car was stolen, but no evidence about the crime was found. It was found that the defendant ran away from the CID men while driving his car on one of the emirate’s roads. Later, the suspect lodged a complaint about his car being stolen to escape punishment.

The CID’s probe found that his theft claim did not hold ground. They added that the man had given CID men the slip the night before reporting his car theft. The case was referred to the public prosecution which charged him with lodging a false claim on his car theft, and sent his case to the RAK misdemeanour court.

The defence lawyer told the court that his client had gone to visit his sister’s house in the Muairidh area where he parked his car for only five minutes. When he discovered that his vehicle was missing, he immediately lodged a theft complaint at the Mamura police station.

The defence lawyer said his client had nothing to hide or escape from the CID men. The thief — who stole his car — was the one who ran away from the security men to escape punishment. But the court found the defendant guilty anyway. ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
