- Ismail Sebugwaawo

abu dhabi — One-and-half tonnes of unlicensed veterinary medicines were seized from an unauthorised vehicle in Al Ain City, according to an official at the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA).

The medicines were found in a vehicle that is not licensed to transport drugs and also didn’t belong to a licensed veterinary medical facility, which is in violation of laws.

Thamir Rashed Al Qassimi, official spokesperson of the ADFCA, said that the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCE) alerted the ADFCA about the vehicle that was suspected of illegally transporting the medicines.

He said that the ADFCA Officials took the necessary procedures and went to the site after gathering all information.

“The vehicle was not licensed for that purpose. Also, the medicines didn’t have any invoice to show its origin,” said Al Qassimi.

According to authorities, veterinary drugs have to be transported by licensed vehicles and in insulated boxes to avoid thermal damage by heating or freezing.

Al Qassimi added that the ADFCA is keen on ensuring the safety of veterinary medicines as well as the vehicles transporting those medicines.

The officials also check to see if there are no banned drugs in the veterinary stores to prevent them from being circulated in the markets.

The ADFCA has urged the public to report people dealing in illegal veterinary drugs or anything suspicious that can cause harm to food safety or livestock.

Legal action will be taken against those caught violating laws, said the ADFCA officials.
