Dubai taxis will be fitted with cameras by year-end
dubai — All 10,221 taxis in Dubai will be fitted with surveillance cameras by the end of this year, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced. So far, 6,500 taxis have been fitted with the cameras.
Through these cameras, the RTA monitors the conduct of taxi drivers and verifies the extent of their compliance with the “professional driving standards as well as moral attitudes”.
Adel Shakri, director of transportation systems, public transport agency, said: “The system aims to ensure the compliance of taxi drivers with the rules and principles of professional and moral conducts. It even motivates them to observe optimal attitudes towards users of the taxi service. The footage of these cameras can be retrieved in case of any violations reported during the taxi trips to eliminate any complaints from service beneficiaries,” added Shakri.
The camera can detect unusual behaviour among the driver which can be used as evidence in case of accident or dispute. All smart cameras will be connected to the operation command centre (OCC) of RTA’s Public Transport Agency. The external cameras that can rotate 360 degrees are also equipped with sensors to detect tailgating on the part of the taxi driver or other motorists.
