Speeding and jumping red signal top traffic violations in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah during the holy month of Ramadan.

Records show that the roads of the emirate saw 2,458 traffic accidents in Ramadan last year.

Col Ahmed Saeed Al Sam Al Naqbi, director of the traffic and patrols department, RAK Police, said most of these accidents were blamed on speeding and jumping red light.

“Five people, including three Emirati nationals and two Asian residents were killed, 32 people were injured in these mishaps.”

Most of the drivers involved in these accidents attributed their misconduct to their bad temper as an alleged result of fasting, he added.

“This is not true as fasting is supposed to train us to be patient, tolerant, and have better self-control.”

Some other drivers were inattentive on the road, while some others were sleepy due to staying up late during Ramadan, he said.

“Some others were driving for a long distance and failed to remain alert on the driving wheel during their long trip.”

Drivers are highly advised to observe speed limit and never drive while feeling uncomfortable or tired, Col Al Naqbi urged.

“Drivers need not drive fast as free Iftar meals are provided all over the emirate, mainly at five major spots in collaboration with the Ihsan charity association.”

Brigadier Jamal Al Ameri, CEO of Saeed association, said many of the accidents reported took place 15 minutes before the Maghreb or sunset time.

“There is no need to rush, and fasting can never be a justification for breaking traffic rules and regulations.”

Some drivers intentionally break red lights to reach home in time, he added. “This has been blamed in several deadly accidents here.”
