dubai — A 19-year-old Saudi man, who was drunk when he resisted and acted violently towards two on-duty police officers, was sentenced to three months in jail on Thursday by a Dubai court.

The unemployed man was also accused of flashing his finger at the cops. The Court of First Instance found him guilty of the charges of resisting and physically assaulting two on-duty police officers, committing an indecent act in public and consuming liquor without a licence. He was also ordered to pay a Dh1,000 fine on the alcohol charge. He will be deported after completing his jail terms, the court ruled. The case dates back to March 30, this year, in Al Muraqqabat area.

A policeman said he and a colleague were patrolling Al Rigga area at 12.55pm. “An Indian watchman came telling us that a man was sleeping in a way that is unsafe to him and others in the parking lot.”

The policemen walked to the accused. “We tried to wake him up. When he opened his eyes and saw our uniform, he did an indecent gesture — flashed his middle finger at us — and then kicked me on my right knee,” said one of the officers.

As the cop fell down, the accused tried to run away but he was caught by the other policeman. “He fought me back fiercely. He bit me in the shoulder and punched me on my head. My colleague then grabbed him,” the other cop said.

The accused was then taken to Al Muraqqabat police station.

The officers gave their depositions on the incident and were then referred to the forensic medical examination.

The watchman, 52, said he got worried when he spotted the man sleeping between the cars in the parking lot outside the building. “I was about to call the police when I saw a patrol car.” He told the prosecutor that he witnessed the drunk man resisting aggressively the two on-duty policeman, kicking, biting and punching them. The defendant has the right to appeal the court ruling within 15 days.
