Work is cut out for whosoever wins in 2019 elections in India

- —K.Ragavan, Denver

This is in reference to the recent by-election results in India, and defeat of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh. Narendra Modi-led BJP was elected with a thumping majority in 2014 general elections. However, after three years of his rule at the Centre, his party has lost a few by-elections including the major state of Uttar Pradesh. Some might think that BJP has lost the grip and touch with the people. Naturally, opposition parties are quick to point that this might led to the downfall of the ruling NDA government. But no one can dispute the fact that overall Modi has created a good name for India in the international community. Modi’s government has completed only four years, and it is a relatively short time to bring about monumental changes. There is a limit to what one can achieve. Previous governments ruled for decades and could not do much. The issue of black money has been taken care of, and the government is now working to bring back money from offshore accounts.

India is a vast country comprising of many states, religions, languages and above all regional parties. Tackling the chaos is not an ordinary task. The ruling party BJP can certainly tackle the present defeats and come to power again with full majority in 2019. Lastly whoever comes to power should work for people’s interest, and development. It should work to eradicate illiteracy, uplift backward classes, support and improve conditions for farmers, improve safety for women and children.
