DUBAI — The UAE rose up the rankings of the Global Peace Index (GPI) report, to emerge as the second most peaceful nation in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region. The country jumped 12 spots — from 56th to 44th — making the rise one of the most significant recorded in this year’s edition.

According to the report, 92 countries deteriorated in rankings, while 71 countries improved between 2016 and 2017.

Over the last decade, the GDP growth of countries that improved in peace was seven times higher than that of countries that deteriorated in peace.

The GPI produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace covers 99.7 per cent of the world’s population and uses 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources to compile the index.
