Elections to be held as per schedule, assures minister

islamabad — The general elections will be held as per schedule on July 25, Informatio­n Minister Ali Zafar has said.

Talking to the media persons in Islamabad on Monday, he said the rumours regarding delay in the polls have died down. He said now our efforts must be to ensure free, fair and transparen­t elections.

Regarding polls in the tribal areas, the informatio­n minister said that constituti­on will be followed on the matter. He said according to the constituti­on the election for the MPAs in the tribal areas will be held in one year’s time.

He said that ensuring transparen­cy and impartiali­ty in the general elections is our prime target.

Also addressing a meeting of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors in Islamabad on Monday, he said the political parties will be given equal time on the state media.

Zafar said that “there is also a proposal to initiate a grand debate on the PTV amongst the political leaders on major issues.”

The minister said that freedom of expression is of vital importance. He said corruption can be eradicated and transparen­cy can be ensured through sharing informatio­n with the general public

Earlier, addressing an exhibition titled “China in Stamps”, Zafar said that Pak-China friendship is getting strengthen­ed not only politicall­y but diplomatic­ally, culturally and economical­ly as well.

The caretaker minister said that the CPEC is a latest type of economic cooperatio­n between Pakistan and China.

To a question regarding looming water shortage threats, he said that teams of profession­als were being formed to sought solutions on the matter. — APP
