dubai — When kids these days are busy with their gadgets here’s a 10-year-old who has authored a sci-fi book and sold more than 100 copies.

Joud Sayed will be holding a book signing event today for his first book titled Vorada: And the Attack of

the Scientist. The 18-chapter book is about three orphan boys who find superpowers and go on an adventure to avenge the murder of their parents.

Sayed, a Lebanese-Canadian student at the GEMS Metropole School, said he has a huge passion for reading and writing. “I first started writing it at the age of nine. The idea came into my head because it’s always been my hobby. It started when my teachers wanted me to write a short story and I just continued and it turned into a long story,” said Sayed, who will sign copies at the Al Jalila Cultural Centre for Children at 5pm on Wednesday. “I read on a daily basis as it’s a hobby for me. I read when I get home. I usually finish short stories in a day. If it’s a long book, I take half a week to finish. My parents are very proud of me and my friends are very impressed.”

The parents said they are proud of him for becoming a young author. Hasan Sayed, Joud’s father, said: “When he finished it, we didn’t think it would be so serious, but, it was an actual book. It’s a great story and we are very proud of him. “When he completed the book, we discovered we could publish it online as an ebook. However, we would love to find a local publisher so it can be available widely here. We want people to see how talented he is.” The book was e-published on March 30 and priced at $9.99 (Dh37). The book is also available in paperback.
