abu dhabi — Three Abu Dhabi schoolchildren have created a smart garbage bin that can move anywhere in the house for people of determination.

The remote-controlled device ‘Zooz Gharb’ works with a mobile application that enables a person to send a message to the garbage bin and guide it through to any place inside the house or their workplace so the wastes can be dumped in. The bin then returns back to its designated place.

The students, Yazen Harz Allah, Khalil Albouni and Rashid Suhail, from the International Community School in Abu Dhabi, said they came up with the idea of creating the smart bin after realising that some people with determination, especially those who can’t walk, were facing difficulties to dispose of garbage.

“Some people of determination, who are important part of the community, find it hard to move frequently to throw away wastes,” said Rashid Suhail.

“They can’t easily move to reach the garbage bins that are usually placed in the kitchen or outside the house. We decided to invent a waste bin that can move and help collect the wastes wherever they are.”

The students explained that their innovation project comprises of a garbage bin-box, which is 30cm wide and 80cm long, a controller, four wheels, a small engine and a wireless electric charger. “The smart bin can operate remotely by sending a message through any mobile phone. It then moves to locate the sender and collects the garbage,” said Suhail. He added: “The cover of the garbage bin opens by the hand-held sensors.”

The students said they carried out at least four test experiments on the device, each costing them Dh400 on the materials, before they came up with the final piece of the smart garbage bin.

It took the students three months to complete their innovation project.

The boys said they have participated in several innovation projects in the UAE including the ‘Think Science Fair 2018’ which was organised by the Emirates Foundation at the Dubai World Trade Centre in Dubai in April.
