abu dhabi — The Philippine government will soon make an announcement on the decision of lifting the ban for recruiting new domestic workers in the UAE, according to the Philippine Ambassador to the UAE.

Speaking to Khaleej Times on the sidelines of the Filipino Community Leadership Summit 2018 in Abu Dhabi on Friday, Hjayceelyn M. Quintana, the Philippine Ambassador to the UAE, said a delegation from the Philippines department of labour will be coming to the UAE next week for discussions on matters of mutual interest with the UAE, which will also include the issue of domestic workers.

“We will be holding a joint-labour consultation meeting with the UAE officials which will involve issues of Filipino workers here,” said Quintana. “After these discussions, we will be making an official announcement on the issue of lifting the ban on recruitment and employment of new Filipino domestic workers to the UAE.”

The Philippine government last year signed a memorandum of un§derstanding (MoU) with the UAE Government on mutual cooperation in the recruitment and employment of domestic workers, but the Philippine government has not yet officially announced the lifting of the ban on the recruitment of domestic workers to the UAE.

The one-day leadership summit, organised by the Bayanihan Council and the Filipino community in the UAE, brought together Filipino

community leaders across the country to learn new leadership skills and to foster unity among Filipino expats.

“The Filipino community is the third largest group in the UAE and this forum ensures that our people acquire great leadership skills that can take the community to greater heights,” said Quintana.

“The leadership and entrepreneurial skills not only help our

people contribute more to the society here but also back home.”

Elmer Casao, chairman, Bayanihan executive board, said: “Unity is a paramount issue in the Filipina community and together we can always reach far. We are utilising this summit to provide leadership skills to our community leaders so they can provide excellent services to fellow countrymen.”
