Levy a nominal charge on plastic bags

-

The popular saying goes, ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child’. This holds true in today’s scenario where despite increasing global warming and despite umpteen articles on ‘Say no to plastics’, people just refuse to pay heed. We talk about it, show concern, celebrate Earth Day with all fervour once in 365 days, and still on the way back from the supermarket we make sure all our purchases are nicely packed in separate plastic bags. Do we actually require so many? Can’t we keep vegetables along with packed lentils in the same reusable bags we bring from home? Is it really important to pack our fresh and soft loaf of bread in a separate polythene cover. Where have all our concerns gone, Just levy a nominal 10 fils per polythene and watch the difference. It will not pinch the wallet much but will go a long way in saving Mother Earth. Deepali Chaturvedi, Dubai
