8.8m Deaths worldwide in 2015 due to coronary artery disease

dubai — Every two seconds someone dies in the world due to cardiovascular (CVD) disease. Besides, 30 per cent of all deaths in the UAE are caused by cardiovascular disease (CVD).

While it’s a known fact that heart disease and heart attacks occur in a relatively younger population in the UAE, Khaleej Times and Thumbay Group will hold an awareness session on ‘Heart Health and Wellness’ in line with the World Heart Day, which falls on September 29.

All attendees will be given a goody hamper while first 50 registrations will get free cardio consultation at Thumbay Hospital Dubai and will also get a chance to enter into a raffle draw.

The session is free and will be addressed by experts from Thumbay Hospital.

Ahead of the day and event, Dr Mohamed Shehata, consultant interventional cardiologist at Thumbay Hospital, advised all youngsters to adopt a healthy lifestyle at a very early age and maintain a good weight.

“People should also try and keep the environment around them stress free to keep their heart healthy,” he added.

Dr Houcem Amiour, Specialist Interventional Cardiologist at Thumbay Hospital, said: “If you have a condition, it is recommended that you go for screening. The ideal blood pressure should be 140/90, other risk factors such as sugar levels and lipid levels should also be checked,” he said.

CVD includes a group of disorders of the heart or blood vessels.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) caused by a build-up of plaque in the coronary arteries. This is the most common type of heart disease and led to 8.8 million deaths worldwide in 2015.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) caused by build-up of plaque in the peripheral arteries is estimated to affect over 202 million people worldwide. Contrary to common belief, it affects all ages.
