dubai — Construction of three bridges that will lead to the deira islands will begin soon, it was announced on saturday. the roads and transport authority (rta) and developer nakheel have awarded the contract for constructing the dh447 million bridges project.

The 1.6km bridges will improve the entrances and exits of the deira islands at the intersection of al khaleej and abu baker al siddique streets. another 140-metre bridge will be constructed along with a slip road at the islands. additionally, an existing bridge will undergo improvements.

Mattar al tayer, director-general and chairman of the board of executive directors of the rta, said: “the project includes a twolane bridge from deira islands to al khaleej street northward; a

three-lane bridge providing free traffic from deira islands to al khaleej street southward; and a two-lane bridge offering free traffic from al khaleej street southward to deira islands.

“al khaleej street flyover allows the construction of two bridges in the direction of abu baker al siddique street in the future.”

The project will enhance the capacity of al khaleej street over 1.8km from abu hail intersection northward to al baraha hospital southward. “two signalised intersections will be added at the intersection of al khaleej street with both abu hail and abu baker al siddique streets. these improvements are part of the shandagha roads network,” said al tayer.

Traffic studies indicate that the deira islands will generate about 110,000 journeys during peak hours, which requires a huge infrastructure of roads and public transport networks.
