dubai — A driving instructor, who was off-duty when he allegedly tried to rape a married woman inside her bedroom, was charged at a Dubai court on Thursday.

Public prosecution records show that on July 27, the 46-year-old Indian driving instructor was not on duty when he sneaked inside the villa of a couple. He had just lured the husband, who was a driving licence applicant, to go outside the house, then tried to force himself on the wife.

He denied the charges of attempted rape and trespassing as he stood trial at the Court of First Instance. A case was registered at the Bur Dubai police station.

The complainant, a 32-yearold Indian nurse, said that at 3:30am, she felt someone getting on top of her, touching her cheek, and hugging her. “I thought at first it was my husband. However, I realised then it was another man. He claimed my husband let him inside my bedroom.”

The man kept trying to sexually assault her and then he gagged her. “He would not let me drink water. I told him to give me some space and I would do whatever he wanted. When I began to scream, he left the room,” she recounted. She said that the accused had entered her room without his shirt.

The victim’s husband, a 31-year-old Indian electrician, said the defendant was his driving instructor. “He called me that night and gave me his car to drive it around my villa as training.” The defendant wanted the victim’s husband to drive on his own that night. But when the latter asked the instructor to stay, he sat inside the car for a while and then said he had to go for prayer, the husband said.

A few minutes later, the husband received a call from his wife telling him that the instructor tried to rape her. The defendant admitted he had entered the couple’s room, claiming he only tried to wake the wife up. The trial is adjourned to October 29.
