Let’s work together to reduce plastic pollution

- HARSHI KABRA

The rampant use of plastic has thrown a new challenge at us. The versatile use of this polymer and its inability to decompose organically is posing a wider threat that endangers our life on this planet. I am a student at Dubai International Academy, and I have been witnessing the merciless use of plastic bottles in our city. I was at Zabeel Park on Friday, for the Dandiya With Falguni event, and noticed the large amounts of plastic bottles and other plasticky trash littered around the area post the event. We were not allowed to carry own water bottles into the area and had to buy it from there. The price of water bottles were higher than the usual, but that’s a subject of another debate later.

What I want to highlight is the absence of adequate trash cans and recycling bins in the amphitheatre, which led most people to litter the area. There was a huge amount of rubbish, especially plastic bottles, collected within a few hours. An outrageous amount of waste was generated in no time and there weren’t many recycling bins to ensure proper disposal. The bottles were an eyesore and I believe that people should be better informed about recycling and reusing the same.

Dubai has been making the right moves and investments for a sustainable future. I think there is an opportunity in our present too that should

be seized. The authorities should consider allowing people to carry their own water bottles at such events. It will reduce unnecessary plastic waste. Also, I would like to request the authorities to ensure adequate trash bins and recycling bins in order to control and effectively recycle the waste generated by such events.
