UAE firm to showcase plant that converts waste to energy
sharjah — The first UAE company that converts waste into energy is showcasing its revolutionary projects at this year’s Wetex, bringing along a model of its Sharjah waste-to-energy plant, the first of its kind in the region.
The exhibition runs from today until October 25 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
A joint venture between Bee’ah and Masdar, the Emirates Waste to Energy Company (Ewec) is making great strides with its landmark Sharjah facility, which can process more than 37.5 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) per hour to generate electricity sustainably.
The plant, which is expected to come on stream by 2021, will divert 300,000 tonnes of municipal waste away from landfills every year, and with this waste, it can generate 30MW of energy that can power up to 28,000 homes.
“As the region’s first wasteto-energy plant, this facility demonstrates an innovative approach to commercialising energy solutions, while ensuring sustainable growth,” said Khaled Al Huraimel, group CEO, Bee’ah.
“Masdar is not only committed to advancing solar power in the region and international markets, but also has a leading position in wind energy and is actively pursuing opportunities in other high-potential clean technologies,” said Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO, Masdar.
