dubai — A Dubai school has managed to raise Dh322,546 for the construction of schools in Cambodia and Nepal. The Millennium School (TMS) managed to collect the amount through its recent third winter carnival, held in partnership with Dubai Cares.

The fund will be contributed to Dubai Cares’ ‘Adopt a School’ initiative, which builds school infrastructure, procures book supplies and conducts teacher training and adult literacy programmes, among other activities.

Last year, TMS aided the construction of three schools in Senegal, Nepal and Malawi through its winter carnival proceeds of Dh383,564, along with some more funds the school had raised through various Year of Giving initiatives. The team from Dubai Cares visited the school this year to personally show their appreciation.

The event was inaugurated by Michael Guzder, the vice president for education at Gems Education. In addition to creating a vibrant ambience, game stalls and exciting prizes, TMS also welcomed Bhutan’s ‘happiness guru’ Dr Saamdu Chetri, who is known for his teachings on mindfulness and its connection to attaining true happiness.

“The TMS Winter Carnival 2018 embodied the charitable, social and entrepreneurial spirit of us, students. We had the opportunity to give back to the community via Dubai Cares; enjoy the festivities with friends and family; and lastly utilise our networking and communication skills to promote the products from our stalls,” said Arun Anand, TMS head boy.

The entire carnival saw teamwork and collaboration at its best as all the members of TMS — from students and teachers to the supervisors, heads, as well as the security and support staff — came together to ensure the success of the event that was intended to make a difference.

“The carnival is very dear to me, as it is the only school function in which each and every member of the school community chooses to work collectively towards a common goal. Students from kindergarten to Grade 12 and all staff members have contributed their time, effort and money towards charity along with promoting the spirit of giving, “said Ambika Gulati, principal of TMS.
