sharjah — Over two tonnes of trash were cleaned up in two hours as 750 volunteers got together in Sharjah’s Mleiha for the first leg of an environmental campaign. The clean-up marked the beginning of the 17th cycle of the 10-day annual environmental campaign ‘Clean-Up UAE’ organised by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG).

Habiba Al Mar’ashi, chairperson of the EEG, said: “The desert

environment has taught us to be patient until the land blossoms, bestowing its bounties on us. Thus, we have to be sincere in supporting our odyssey of development and progression to achieve the aspirations of our people.

“Year after year, the Clean-Up UAE campaign has seen dedicated participation from organisations, governments, academia, students, families and individuals. The continuity of the campaign for the last 17 years is solely due to the diligence and wholehearted participation of every individual.”

The campaign will continue till December 17.

Some 750 residents clean up Sharjah’s Mleiha on the first day of a nationwide environmental drive.
