sharjah — Firefighters from three civil defence stations battled a massive blaze in a Sharjah warehouse for about two hours before it was brought under control. No casualties were reported in the fire that broke out at 8am on Sunday. Home supplies were stored at the warehouse in Sharjah industrial area number 18.

A top official from the Sharjah Civil Defence said the fire spread quickly because of the flammable items inside like furniture and other home essentials. Firefighters from Al Mina, Samnan and industrial stations were dispatched to the site. After dousing the flames, the cooling operation lasted till 1.30pm. The site has been handed over to the police’s forensic teams to determine the cause of the fire.

The officer said the number of fire accidents has declined by “more than 80 per cent in 2018 as compared to 2019”. “All of the fire accidents occurred due to non-compliance with safety rules and maintenance of fire prevention equipment,” he added.

The owners are asked to bear the cost of the firefighting operation if they are found guilty of violating safety regulations, the officer warned.
