dubai — A worker at an auto workshop has been sentenced to six months in jail by the Court of First Instance on Tuesday after he was found guilty of sexually harassing an off-duty Dubai policewoman.

According to public prosecution records, the incident took place on June 13, 2018, when the 35-year-old Iranian worker got close to the complainant who was in her car, kissed her on the cheek, and touched her.

The complainant, 23, said she went to a workshop in Al Quoz to change the glass tinting of her car. “The accused, who worked there, stood very close to my car in a way that I could not step off. I told him to step away. I also removed his hand when he placed it on my left shoulder. But instead of staying away from me, he got closer.”

The complainant then shut her door and told the worker, who stood right in front of her car, that she changed her mind about the service. “He said he wanted to talk to me but I told him to move away from the car and I left the workshop and then called the police,” she told the prosecutor.

A police officer, who responded to the incident report, said the cameras installed inside the shop showed the defendant as he got his upper body inside the complainant’s car through the window. “But the camera did not capture what he did inside the car.”

The defendant, who was taken into custody shortly later, denied the charge.

The ruling may be appealed.
