PTI leader Aleem Khan remanded to NAB custody till February 15
lahore — An accountability court here on Thursday handed over former provincial minister Abdul Aleem Khan to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for physical remand in the assets beyond means case till February 15.
Earlier, NAB officials produced Aleem Khan before judge Syed Najamul Hasan Bukhari.
The NAB’s prosecutor, Waris Ali Janjua, argued that Aleem Khan was detained after he failed to satisfy the bureau in connection with his offshore companies and assets.
He argued that Aleem Khan’s assets did not correspond with his income and pleaded with the court to grant 15-day physical remand of the accused for investigations.
However, Aleem’s counsel Azhar Siddique opposed the request, saying all assets of Aleem were declared in income tax records. He submitted that Aleem Khan inherited money whereas there was no allegation that he misused his authority.
The court after hearing arguments initially reserved its verdict and later handed over Aleem Khan to the NAB on physical remand till February 15. A large number of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf workers were present inside and outside the court.
The senior Punjab minister was arrested on Wednesday after he appeared before the anti-graft watchdog at its regional headquarters in Lahore in cases pertaining to an offshore company revealed in the Panama Papers leaks and for accumulating assets beyond known sources of income.
After his arrest, Khan stepped down as provincial minister for community development. —
