Poised for change
The Fujairah 2040 Plan focuses on enhancing the road, housing, transport and infrastructure facilities in the emirate
Fujairah is a coastline emirate that is well-known for its tourism. Its blue-water beaches and Hajar Mountains are a perfect getaway for a staycation and is a well-loved destination for tourists who wish to experience nature. Fujairah has a bunkering port, and its shipping operations are attracting more and more international vessels.
The emirate of Fujairah is witnessing a change in several areas. According to the official portal of the UAE government, the Fujairah 2040 Plan focuses on enhancing the housing and transportation infrastructure facilities in the emirate. The municipality has begun work on road improvements, building water barriers, ports and residential complexes and expanding healthcare facilities at the cost of Dh1.5 billion.
The Fujairah seaport would have new terminals for oil, marine services, dry bulk and containers with an anchorage area. Fujairah is the only emirate with an Indian Ocean front. The main port is being developed and an oil pipeline from Abu Dhabi is also in operation.
Major expansion plans for Fujairah airport will see the runway upgraded to handle planes as large as an A380, as the emirate sets its sights on welcoming more visitors to the east coast. The plans include a new control tower in the style of a falcon, runway upgrades to handle wider and heavier planes, and a parallel taxiway where aircraft can queue up, thereby leading to improved efficiency at the airport.
Meanwhile, streets and major roads are being relaid and traffic signals are being added. Around 8,800 new homes and 1,500 hotel rooms would be built over the next five years. One of the reasons for launching the Fujairah 2040 Plan is to be able to cater to its population that is expected to exceed half million by 2040.
Meanwhile, Fujairah Terminals has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with United Steel Industries (USI), a premier manufacturer of rebars, rods and wire coils. The agreement supports the handling of the company’s import and export shipments through the Port of Fujairah, which means Fujairah Terminals will facilitate all required logistics support for the company.
