Hail falls on Jebel Jais, marks end of winter

ras al khaimah — It rained ice in the UAE on Saturday. Much to the delight of residents who happened to be at the Jebel Jais, the tallest mountain in the UAE, a hailstorm hit the area. The dry Hajar range mountain was transforme­d into a wet hill station.

A video captured by a visitor went viral after it gave the impression of snowfall at the Jebel Jais. The National Centre of Meteorolog­y (NCM), however, said snow was not reported. Saleh Khattar, duty forecaster at the NCM, told Khaleej Times: “Some hail and moderate rain have been reported on the Jebel Jais. However, no snow has been reported.”

Winter officially ended in the UAE on on March 21. Adel Kamal, staff weatherman at the NCM, said the lowest temperatur­e recorded during the season was 1.0°C at the Jebel Jais in January. The average temperatur­e was 19.7°C, while the highest temperatur­e was 39.6°C at Abu Dhabi’s Waheed station, Kamal added.

A visitor, Hosam Ibrahim, who happened to catch the hail on the day, said it started early. “I always take my family and go to the mountain in such fine and unique weather conditions.”
