dubai — Anyone who grew up in the UAE will tell you that they have fond memories of watching

Captain Majid on television in the afternoon after school.

The story of the talented football player delighted kids across the UAE in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and any fan will be quick to spot the hero at this year’s Middle East Film and Comic Con (MEFCC). Only thing is, his name is Captain Tsubasa, said Sarah Tangney, from the marketing team at KLab Inc.

“Captain Tsubasa has a huge following in the Middle East; people have been reading the manga and watching the anime for a very long time so it is a household name,” she said on the first day of the event. “A lot of people have loved the series for a very long time and the Middle East is a region that loves football, so it continues to remain popular.”

KLab Inc, which is taking part at the event for the first time, is hosting the Dubai round of the Captain Tsubasa: Dream Team Dream Championship 2019 at its booth at the comic con, and the winner will receive a trip to Tokyo, Japan, to participate in the Dream Championship Finals that will be held there in fall 2019.

“The championship rounds are going to take place at the booth on Saturday, and the winner will go to Japan to compete against 15 other people from all over the world for the finals. Gamers, bring forth your best team,” Tangney said.

If football is not your cup of tea, there is plenty more to be excited about at this year’s edition of comic con.

Merchandise hunters looking for a deal would do well to stop by the Geek Nation stand, said Faisal Aljabri, marketing and PR executive at Geekay Group.

“We have merch from all the major TV shows, movies, games and animes,” he said. “One thing that I am sure fans are going to be happy about is the fact that we are already stocking merch from Avengers Endgame. Usually, you have to wait around two months after a movie is released to pick up the action figures, but we are already stocking exclusive merchandise for our fans.”
