dubai — The Dubai Police have felicitated Khaleej Times on Thursday for its pioneering ‘KT for Good’ campaign on road safety.

The Dubai Police cited the newspaper’s “excellence in publishing a series of articles dealing with various safety issues and traffic awareness for all members of society”.

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director-general of the Dubai Police’s traffic department, handed the award to Khaleej

Times reporter Angel Tesorero. Also recognised were road safety experts Ian Littlefield and Thomas Edelmann for their contributions to the KT for Good campaign. Present at the ceremony were Colonel Essam Al Awar, director of the traffic department; Butti Ahmed bin Darwish Al Falasi, director of security awareness; and Dr Mostafa Aldah, head of the traffic studies section.

The KT for Good — a series of campaigns aimed at raising concerns and awareness on issues that impact UAE residents — was launched by Khaleej Times on January 15, with road safety as the maiden topic. For 14 days straight, KT presented across all its platforms not just the statistics but also the stories of people losing lives and limbs due to road accidents.

Khaleej Times also gave practical tips and shed light on laws and regulations governing UAE roads.

KT also asked the readers, authorities and road safety experts on how to make an impact and carry out reforms to have a safe driving culture in the country.

Al Mazrouei said the recognition for Khaleej Times came under the directive of Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commanderin-Chief of the Dubai Police, who noted that “the media is the most important element in spreading awareness on road safety”.

“Honouring and motivating distinguished journalists seeking to serve the community, providing advice and guidance in compliance with the law, traffic regulations are very important. We hope that they will maintain this high level of commitment as the media is a key partner when it comes to dealing with Dubai Police news, events, activities, initiatives and campaigns. Their stories carry out messages of awareness that help us reach a large segment of society,” Al Mazrouei noted.

He added: “The Dubai Police are keen on providing the highest levels of security and safety for all, including reducing the number of road deaths by harnessing all human and technical possibilities to achieve the highest levels of safety.”

Al Mazrouei also said the Dubai Police will invite more stakeholders to initiate a multi-sectoral approach to promote road safety.

For his part, Littlefield noted: “The recognition we received demonstrates the Dubai Police’s pro-active stance in reducing risk and managing road safety, through an approach that draws on the knowledge and experience of multiple stakeholders. I believe that some of the ideas discussed today can lead towards a comprehensive road safety management framework that is truly inclusive and unique.”
