sharjah — A sharp decline has been observed in common traffic violations in the first quarter of this year — 45 per cent decrease in seat belt violations, 11 per cent reduction in distraction while driving offences, and a 7 per cent drop in using mobile phones while driving — compared to the same period last year.

Lt-Col Khalid Al Kai, deputy director of traffic and patrol department of the Sharjah Police, attributed the positive traffic indicators to the three police’s awareness campaigns — ‘Avoid Distraction While Driving’, ‘Your Belt, Your Safety’ and ‘Avoid Speaking Over The Phone While Driving’.

“The inspection and awareness campaigns organised since the beginning of this year have played a great role in spreading awareness among members of the society. The positive result of the indicators show the enhanced traffic safety awareness among the public.

He explained that the campaigns included various activities — awareness lectures, distribution of leaflets and messages through various media.

Lt-Col Al Kai urged the motorists to be committed to traffic rules and pay attention while driving to avoid serious accidents that could lead to loss of lives.
