We haven’t experienced such heavy showers in the UAE before, and clearly the sewerage system in place is not enough to accommodate such a downpour. Global warming has created uneven patterns, even the desert is getting battered with rains. Hopefully, authorities will come up with some solution.

• The sewerage and drainage masterplan in the UAE should aim at expanding the capacity of the existing system to cope well with such heavy rains. —Shamal Kanti Nath, KT website

• We stay in Sharjah and we face the hardest time. Muweilah area is inundated, streets near schools, and the new road towards Maliha area have turned into a stream. Many people have

incurred losses and damages to their vehicles. We residents need help; at least the water should be pumped out of the roads soon.

• In my opinion, the situation would have been much better and casualties much lesser if the rainy days were declared mandatory off-days for all sectors except the most required ones — especially when the weather is predictable and forecasted that it would rain heavily (Nearly 1,900 traffic accidents in Dubai because of rain;

KT, Jan 12). We could compensate for the loss of a working day or two by working on Saturdays, for instance. This way, we can reduce the number of emergency calls to the cops, there will be less stranded vehicles on roads, and a lot less chaos. —Adheip Pal, KT website

Trump never fails to surprise

Many children bully other children by calling them names or drawing insulting images of them. Quite surprisingly, we have a person, who is no longer a child but still acts in this way.

US President Donald Trump’s latest tweet, actually a retweet, shows Ms Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wearing headwear and standing in front of the Iranian flag, stating that they are corrupt and with the implications that they are terrorists. This tweet is insulting in so many ways and should be deleted but, it is just another of his smoke screen ideas in order to distract people from the impeachment and other concerns. Why is this childish approach used by the president and why is he allowed to? Turning off his twitter account could be a good idea.
