Hardships make us resilient and more human

-

There is a proverb in Malayalam, which roughly translates as, ‘Stretch your legs according to your coverlet’ (Indian businessman loses millions,

works at tea shop in Dubai; KT, March 2). I am a banker and the plight of this young man seems only too familiar. Over leveraging, assumption of high debt and relying on buyers with no underlying commitment backing their orders, the young man walked himself into a trap. Prudence in all matters is essential. — G Suresh, KT website

• I am touched by the resilience of Nijeesh. “It takes a lifetime to build a family, business, reputation, but a split second to see it all crumbling down,” he said, and he is right. His world came crashing down, but his resilience and support from his friend Abdul Rasheed are helping him overcome the hardships. This is just the beginning, there is more to achieve and accomplish. God’s grace be upon you both!

Gender bias still exists in India

This is in reference with the opinion column Women are yet to break free from the shackles

of patriarchy (KT, March 1). Male dominance is a concern in various societies and the disparity is so deep-rooted that girls/ women have to face it at all levels. At home, women are expected to look after kitchen work, kids, and family overall despite her education degrees or job profile. At workplace the discrimination is rampant when it comes to opportunities or scaling the ladder.

Many parents feel that spending on girls’ education is of no value as in future they will only serve their husbands and in-laws.

Indian constitution provides equal rights and privileges to men and women yet a majority of women do not enjoy the rights and opportunities they are entitled to. We need change in mindsets, and that is easier said than done.
