Physical and mental health key to disease prevention: Experts
sharjah — Sound health practices, both in physical and psychological levels, are important in disease prevention, experts have said.
In the first session of Sharjah Ramadan Majlis organised by the Sharjah Press Club on Instagram, experts discussed the importance of ‘healthy lifestyles and disease prevention’. The session featured Brig Dr Ali Singel, health adviser to the Dubai Police, and Dr Hossam Al Tatari, consultant, paediatrics, infectious diseases and immunology at the Heart Medical Centre in Al Ain. The session was moderated by Ahmed Sultan, anchor and television host from the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority.
Dr Ali Singel underscored the importance of mental health and its impact on public health, explaining how negative thoughts could have far-reaching repercussions for human immunity. He called for enhancing disease prevention through sound health practices, both at the psychological and physical levels. The expert stressed that everyone is responsible for not just his own health but the overall health and wellbeing of his family.
Referring to Covid-19, Dr Singel called for learning the vital lessons from the crisis and embracing basic hygiene practices, such as frequent hand washing and safety measures like social distancing.
He lauded the role of the media in disseminating authentic medical information and promoting general health awareness among all members of the society and encouraging hygiene practices.
Dr Hossam Al Tatari shed light on how the human immune system works and the various stages it goes through with age. He also discussed various methods of disease prevention and the various causes of vulnerability and weak immunity in some individuals.
Stressing the importance of nutritional behaviour in building a strong immune system, especially in children, he highlighted the vital nutrients and vitamins that a person can obtain from a balanced diet. He also underlined the importance of necessary vaccinations in fighting various diseases.
The Sharjah Press Club will host the second session of the Ramadan Majlis on May 5 at 10pm on the role of the media in times of crisis. Veteran Omani media figure Khaled Al Zadjali and Egyptian journalist and television host Lamis Elhadidy will take part in the discussion.
