An Emirati family is making the best of #StayHome Ramadan by bonding in prayers and spending quality time with each other.

Ashwaq Al Breki, a 29-year-old who stays with her mum, dad and three siblings, in Shakbout area of Abu Dhabi says Ramadan, for her family, means getting closer to Allah.

“Of course, this year is different, given the Covid-19 situation. But for me and my family, it is the best Ramadan,” said Al Breki adding that everyone — parents and siblings — working remotely from home has allowed them more time to stay together and socialise.

“We spend the whole day together, praying and talking about everything affecting us as family. This year’s Ramadan has strengthened my relationship with my parents and siblings,” said the Emirati who works for a government department in Abu Dhabi. “We pray five daily prayers and Taraweeh together. It has never happened before.

Al Breki’s mother, Umm Mohammed said this Ramadan has made her closer to her children. “We are amidst a pandemic. But I feel happy to spend more time with my kids,” she said.

Al Breki does miss gatherings with relatives and friends, yet the family enjoys preparing Iftar and Suhoor meals together. “I have just

learned cooking. Since I work remotely, I get time to do household chores and cook with my mum and siblings,” she said.

The family starts preparing Iftar meals at 5pm and by 6.20pm, everything is ready and the family awaits for theMaghrib prayer. “Our favourite dishes on the Iftar table are samosa, harees, gemat, pizza and rice.”
