abu dhabi — The family of a five-year-old boy, who suffered 100 per cent permanent disability after being run over by a car in Al Ain, has been awarded Dh2 million in compensation.

The Insurance Dispute Settlement and Resolution Committee of the Insurance Authority issued the ruling during a public session, ordering the insurance firm that covered the car of the driver of the car to pay the compensation amount to the Asian family.

According to court documents, the boy was walking on a road in a residential neighbourhood in Al Ain when the car knocked him down and ran over him.

A police investigation confirmed that the motorist was driving the car recklessly and inattentively, leading to the tragic accident.

A medical report said the child sustained severe head injuries, including deep cuts in the skull and brain damage, abdominal and chest injuries and multiple fractures. The boy became bedridden after the accident as he was 100 per cent disabled.

His condition required “expensive treatment and great care”, given his small age, said the medics.

The Al Ain traffic court had convicted the driver and fined him Dh4,000.

The case was then referred to the Insurance Dispute Settlement and Resolution Committee to determine the compensation amount to be awarded to the child’s family.

Lawyer and legal advisor Jameela Al Balushi, who represented the boy’s family, said the family had asked the committee to oblige the firm that insured the driver’s car to pay Dh10 million in compensation for the physical, material and moral damages. But the committee estimated a compensation of Dh2 million.
