Gang jailed for shipping stolen supercar abroad

The Dubai Court of Appeal has upheld a ruling by the Court of First Instance which sentenced a gang of Eastern Europeans to prison for a year followed by deportation, and ordered them to pay Dh1,400,000, for stealing a sports car.

Last March, a luxury vehicle rental company reported the theft of a 2019 Lamborghini vehicle worth Dh1,400,000. It said one of the defendants rented the vehicle for seven days but did not return it after the expiry of the lease.

The rental company went to the police, where investigations found the defendant had handed the supercar over to other gang members who had then taken it out of the country. All five accused were identified and arrested.

One admitted to disconnecting the car's navigation device to hide its location, while another changed the engine base numbers and provided a false number plate with the help of the rest. They then had a shipping company take it out of the country with forged papers.
