ABB Robotics unveils the world’s first robot-painted art automobile

ABB Robotics has created the world’s first robot-painted art automobile in collaboration with two renowned painters, Advait Kolarkar, an eight-year-old Indian child prodigy, and Illusory, a Dubaibased digital design group. Without the use of humans, ABB’s Pixel Paint technology has recreated Advait’s whirling monochromatic design as well as Illusorr’s tri-color geometric designs.

The incredibly complicated artworks were completed in less than 30 minutes by ABB’s IRB 5500 paint robots, which were equipped with 1,000 nozzles in the printer head. Pixel Paint technology captures complex, elaborate detail that would be impossible to produce by hand with precision and speed.

“ABB’s Pixel Paint technology is more than an evolution – it is

It’s a bright illustration of how robotic automation and our Robot Studio software can not only open the way for more sustainable production, but also recreate delicate works of art that reflect the uniqueness and beauty of the human soul.

a revolution,” said Sami Atiya, President of ABB’s Robotics & Discrete Automation business unit.

It’s a bright illustration of how robotic automation and our Robot Studio software can not only open the way for more sustainable production, but also recreate delicate works of art that reflect the uniqueness and beauty of the human soul. Pixel Paint is a game-changer, allowing any design to be recreated in a sustainable and inexpensive manner at a time when consumers seek more individualized items.”

Pixel Paint technology also improves industrial sustainability by eliminating the need for masking materials and additional ventilation, resulting in lower emissions and water and energy savings. The paint head is controlled by the company’s Robot Studio software.

The product is only run through the paint shop once, and different paint colors are applied fast. For automakers, this can cut production time in half and save costs by up to 60%.

ABB restored a Volkswagen SUV that was damaged in Germany’s disastrous floods in the summer of 2021 to produce the art car.

Its recycling demonstrates ABB’s dedication to environmental sustainability.
