How Navraj Hans established himself in the industry.

The singer’s high-voltage performance at the Awards had ‘em swinging

Punjabi singer Navraj Hans is a bundle of energy and you can’t help but swing to his songs when he belts out hits, one after the other. An established celebrity in the Punjabi entertainment industry, Navraj is popular singer Hans Raj Hans’ son and the son-inlaw of Daler Mehndi. But the singer himself wants to specialise in qawaali! Why? Read on… How do you prepare for a concert?

I think I love my music so much that the energy comes automatically. I also feel I have the blessings of my elders and those who I respect. I always give my 100 per cent to a performance and every concert of mine, I behave as if it’s my last one. What genre of music do you enjoy the most?

I really enjoy qawaali! I have always been in awe of the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sahib. I would have loved to practise it but frankly, the market is limited. It’s unfortunate that you have to cater to what is popular in the market, establish your name first and then you can follow your heart. Who knows 10 years from now, I will be performing great qawaalis! How do you modify your music according to the tastes of the audience? I have opened shows for so many singers, and been in the background for such a long time that I now know the pulse of the audience. I usually have a long list with me, so I don’t have Plan A but also Plan B and C. So I can change my songs and performance according to the mood. Will you also be doing more films now?

I have currently taken a break from acting to pursue music. Just like Hindi films, even in Punjabi, content is king and you can’t give people substandard work. What has been your biggest dream that has come true? That I meet and sing for Amitabh Bachchan. I managed to do both! And your biggest dream now?

I want to remain busy with shows and also focus on my riyaz. I am a huge believer in destiny so things will work out just fine.
