GOT MARRIED: In January this year with the entire wedding happening back home in India. It comprised six events across four different cities, all in the space of one week! HONEYMOON DESTINATIONS: Maldives Gopika says they decided on Maldives four months before the wedding but actually got around to planning it and booking flights and resorts only a month before the family flew out for the wedding. But they had no second thoughts about the destination. “We’re both beach bums so choosing a beach destination was a no-brainer. We also knew we’d be exhausted after the wedding and didn’t want to spend hours on an airplane. Maldives is only a short four-hour flight from India and another 4-hour direct flight back to the UAE, so it was perfect!” she says.

For honeymooners, Maldives ticks all the right boxes. Just when the flight lands in Male, the view of the turquoise lagoons from up above is enough to tell you that it is paradise calling you! Great weather, secluded villas with a private pool and direct access to the sea, extraordinary spas where you can watch Sting Rays and colourful fish swimming beneath the glass flooring while you get a massage and impeccable dining experiences combined with unparalleled service – what more do you need? “Basically it offers everything you need after a hectic wedding!” says Gopika.

For Gopika and her better half, snorkelling and scuba diving were definitely the highlights. “Exploring the exotic, colourful marine life and endless natural coral reefs was beyond breath-taking,” she says. “They even gave us snorkelling equipment that we could carry to our villas and use at the private beach. We also did some really fun water sports like Jet Skiing and fly boarding. Some evenings were spent at a grape-tasting session or in a cocktail lab,” she adds.

Maldives, she says, is the perfect post-wedding getaway. From those who just want a quiet romantic holiday to those who would love an adventure, Maldives has something to offer for everyone! “Do your research and find a property that best suits you – from adult-only resorts and luxurious private islands to adventure-packed properties and all-inclusive hotels, options are plenty. Don’t over-plan your honeymoon, enjoy it while it lasts and take each day as it comes – Maldives will surprise you!” is Gopika’s advice.
