How to take care of your hair before your wedding in six steps. Hair expert Catherine Hawkes has got the deets

-

Getting your hair in tiptop shape before your wedding, requires you to think about what you are putting into your body as well as investing in some personalised hair treatments. It is always advisable to start thinking about how you want your hair to be at your wedding a few months before. Here are 6 steps to healthy, shiny hair before D-day!

1. EXPERIMENT

Start trying out different styles or experiment with colour or cuts, if you’re looking for a change around three months before your wedding. You’re going to want some time to allow your stylist to help you create your dream hairstyle or should you have any mishaps, you want enough time to grow out a cut or be able to change your colour without damaging your hair.

2. FOOD FOR HAIR

Focus on hair health. What you put into your body is essential and there are many amazing and delicious foods you can enjoy to promote healthy, shiny hair. One of the best foods you can eat is salmon as it is loaded with vitamins, including Vitamin D which stimulates hair follicles to grow. Salmon is also full of protein and it contains Omega-3 fatty acids which promote hair growth and healthy scalp.

3. SUPERFOOD FOR HAIR

Note for vegetarians: Another delicious superfood is the avocado; you’ve probably seen DIY hair masks across the web which all include avocado. This is because the oil helps to rejuvenate and moisturise the scape. Avocado is also a rich source of proteins, amino acids and vitamins which helps soothe the scalp which in turn promotes long, strong, healthy hair growth.

4. VITAMINS

Another way to promote healthy hair is through supplements, ask your stylist for advice on these. Some of the top vitamins you should look out for would be:

Vitamin A

Helps skin glands make an oily substance called Sebum which helps to moistures the scalp keeping hair healthy.

Vitamin B

Helps create red blood cells which generate oxygen to the hair follicles which again promotes healthy hair.

Vitamin C

An amazing anti-oxidant that also helps to produce collagen which, from the base, helps to create a strong hair structure.

Vitamin E

Prevents oxidative stress which allows the hair to grow more freely

Iron

It makes sure the scalp is circulating blood and oxygen which again promotes and allows for healthy hair follicles.

5. TREATMENTS

The final step to optimum hair health is investing in some treatments. I would suggest doing at least six sessions once a week before your wedding day depending on your hair type and condition.

For Slightly to Extremely Dry Hair

If you’ve got lack of shine and slightly to extremely dry hair, there are two different options from two amazing, luxury brands. The first is from the Oribe Moisture and Control range and the second is from the Kerastase Nutritive range, using either of these treatments will intensively moisturise your hair giving it a shiny, silky look.

For hair with split and brittle ends

The Kerastase Extensioniste treatment is amazing. If you use the at-home products on a daily basis your hair will grow an inch in a month!

For frizzy or curly hair

Especially if you are having your wedding in a tropical location, I would suggest the Redken Frizz Dismiss. This will help tame hair and keep it frizz free on your wedding day even if there is a bit of humidity.

6. HOME CARE

The last thing to note is that it is important to have a great at-home care regimen too. A lot of these treatments also have complimentary shampoo and conditioners in their ranges so invest in these as they will help maintain the treatments desired effects by sealing the hair cuticles.
